Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Science

COURSE TITLE

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Science

COURSE CODE:

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Science focuses on applied practical scientific methods. Both options are highly analytical in nature and involve strong communication skills and use of knowledge-based systems. The course is designed to produce graduates who, upon graduation are equipped to contribute at the planning and research level. They will be able to collect, analyze and interpret data and findings in a variety of fields. The graduates of the course will demonstrate an awareness of the importance of integrity, ethics and professionalism in the execution of their profession.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the course should find employment as Scientists and Technologists in the private and public sectors as well as conducting minor consulting services.

a) There will be much greater opportunities for employment throughout CARICOM than there are at present due to the provision of the Caribbean Single Market Economy that qualified citizens will be allowed to work anywhere within the region and the implied need for increased and improved techniques in the management of science-based processes. The implications of the CSME include the need for increased and improved techniques in the methods of managing environmental problems. (This is also one of the Millenium Development Goals.)

Industrial and Analytical Chemists will also find employment throughout the region in the various industries. Potential employers indicated that there is a lack of Quality Control in current University programmes, throughout the region, and this Course addresses this, with a number of Quality Control modules.

b) The option of Industrial and Analytical Chemistry would prepare graduates with greater skills for the industrial workplace. They should have experience in operating equipment and specialised instruments as well as understanding what they do. As well aspects of quality assurance, safety practices and laboratory management would increase the value of the graduates to companies, as several companies have indicated.

c) The graduate with either Environmental Science or Industrial and Analytical Chemistry (or both) would have the invaluable scientific skills and could add the business training to start their own businesses. With the high demand for improved Environmental practices and for quality in commercial products, and services, the enterprising graduates can create their own profitable employment opportunities.

d) External funding agencies are concerned both with environmental and industrial quality concerns, so opportunities exist for graduates to become involved in projects, thus earning and gaining valuable experience.

e) Graduates of this course – Applied Science – will be in a position to move on to further qualifications. A Letter of Intent has been prepared for the Masters degree in Environmental Science, as well as the Masters in Industrial and Analytical Chemistry. In addition, the background of this course allows for graduates to go into Quality auditing, becoming certified quality auditors, and other career options follow from the basic topics in the course.

f) Consultations with schools guidance counselors and University placement offices will be done as part of the course preparation. As well research will be conducted on specific existing jobs to detail salaries and conditions. This will be useful for attracting students.
