Our History

-
1958: The original name of UTech was the
Jamaica Institute of Technology; just over 50 students
were enrolled and only four programmes were offered.
-
1959: The name was changed to the College of Arts,
Science and Technology (CAST)
-
1964: UTech’s incorporation into the CAST
scheme was validated by an Act of Parliament
-
1986: CAST Scheme was revised to make UTech a
degree-granting institution; the University was also empowered
to conduct affairs under two Statutory Bodies (i.e. Governing
Council & Academic Board)
-
1995: UTech was formally accorded University status on
September 1,1995
-
1999: UTech’s Student population rose to over 6,000
-
Over 100
programmes at Certificate, Diploma & Degree levels
-
Academic
offerings & development modeled on English Polytechnic
-
Emphasis
on flexibility of approach, work-based learning,
professional linkages.

programmes franchised through links with Community Colleges
